General Questions?

Here are some of the most common questions I get about working together.

If you don’t see your question listed, or are ready to schedule a free 15-minute consult, you can contact me

    • My physical office is located at 3030 Ashley Town Center Dr STE 203B, Charleston, SC 29414. However, I do provide telehealth to all areas of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia.

    • Yes

    • No more having to arrange childcare for your other kids, leave work early, sign this child out of school, fight traffic, and/or sit in the waiting room until they’re finished

    • Parents/caregivers are able to join by video or phone from anywhere (e.g., on the road, at work, in town, from another room while looking after other child(ren)).

    • Through an open collaboration, I conduct an extensive assessment of presenting concerns, any accompanying distress, and the negative impact those have caused across settings (e.g., at school, at work, in the community, with family and/or friends).

    • I then use evidence-based screening tools to determine whether an individual is an appropriate match for the type of treatment I provide.

    • If it is not a good fit, I use my professional, clinical judgement to make appropriate referrals to alternate providers.

    • Checking in

    • Letting you know what my preliminary agenda is for the session

    • Asking for your input on anything additional that you would like to discuss or work on

    • Working on the agenda items

    • Assigning between-session homework, based on our work that day and/or your goals for the coming week

    • At the end of session, asking what your takeaways are (e.g., something you found helpful or interesting)

    • Confirming the scheduling of our next session

    • The approach I take is very structured and organized. However, I am a big believer that you are the expert on what’s going on with you. You are my boss, and this is your time and your treatment. So you are welcome to use it as you see fit. I encourage you to let me know if there is ever a time when you would rather have a non-EMDR session or switch our focus to other concerns.

    • I’m pretty laid back, but I also enjoy intellectually stimulating conversations.

    • I try to incorporate humor, when appropriate, to bring some levity to our conversations. I have found that this is especially helpful when treating trauma, because the content of sessions can be very heavy and intense at times.

    • Intakes can take anywhere from 1-2 hours, depending on the quantity and complexity of the presenting concerns.

    • If the client is a minor, parents/caregivers should plan to be available for the entire two hours. Older adolescents and young adults may prefer to meet privately for most of the intake, but there are several questions they may need their parents’/caregivers’ assistance with at the beginning (e.g., family, developmental, and/or medical history).

    • The intake will not be conducted until all documents on the Client Portal have been signed and the most recent, signed custody agreement has been provided.

    • A copy of the most recent, signed custody agreement will need to be uploaded to the Client Portal at least 24 hours prior to the start of the intake. This will allow adequate time for review, to ensure we are all in compliance with the order. If not provided in advance, the intake will need to be rescheduled.

    • I like to start off by meeting on a weekly basis. However, this can be more or less frequent, as needed. At minimum, I recommend that sessions not be any less frequent than biweekly. Otherwise, gains and skills learned may become hard to maintain between sessions.

    • The optimal length for EMDR sessions is 60-90 minutes, 1-2 times a week. However, this is flexible and can be adjusted based on needs and preferences.

    • 2-hour intakes: $370

    • 45-minute sessions: $140

    • 60-minute sessions: $185

    • 75-minute sessions: $230

    • 90-minute sessions: $275

    • Yes, I partner with Alma to accept certain Aetna and Cigna plans. I am also currently on the waitlist to accept Optum, Carelon, and BCBS Anthem plans.

    • Provide Alma with your insurance information at https://secure.helloalma.com/check-my-insurance-coverage/?provider=avery-spriggs& to see if yours is a plan I accept.

    • I am also able to provide superbills for those whose insurance plans offer out-of-network reimbursement benefits.

    • No, I do not. However, I’d be happy to refer to you out/link you with an in-network provider who may be able to.

    • All major credit and debit cards

    • Health Savings Account (HSA) cards

    • Flexible Spending Account (FSA) cards

    • Despite its name, it’s actually not a bill. It’s a detailed receipt that outlines the services received.

    • When using superbills, clients are responsible upfront for the cost of services and later reimbursed by their insurance directly.

    • While the system can automatically provide monthly superbills upon request, clients are responsible for forwarding/submitting them to their insurance company.

    • Submitting superbills does not guarantee that insurance will pay for the services provided. It is the client’s responsibility to contact their insurance before starting treatment to find out what exactly is covered under their particular plan.

    • On the Resources page, I have provided a PDF guide on how to check your coverage for seeing an out-of-network therapist.

    • Past clients’ insurance plans provided an average of 60-70% reimbursement for out-of-network treatment costs.

    • Yes, I have always found it helpful to collaborate with all providers involved, so that the best possible treatment plan can be devised.

    • Yes, with at least 2 weeks’ notice. Administrative work outside of session is billed at my hourly rate, in 15-minute increments.

    • The amount of time it takes to write those letters will depend on how much information is required.

    • On average, it takes about 2-3 hours to write such letters.
